Prayer

As Christians we believe prayer to be an effective means of helping and supporting other people, so if you feel able, please send us any prayer requests.

What is Prayer?

It's talking to God. You can use set prayers (there are many examples in the Bible), or you can use ordinary language - just as you would when taking to a person. You do not have to use special language or words!

Prayer can be expressing you love towards God (which Christians call praise or worship). Or telling God about your needs and problems. And it's all right to express you anger and frustration. Many of the Psalms do this.

The Lord's Prayer

This is probably one of the most well known prayers in the Bible. It is the prayer that Jesus taught his followers.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13 (Authorised Version)

This is the old Authorised Version, which uses 400 year old English. Perhaps a translation into more up-to-date English may be easier for many of us to understand:

Our Father in heaven, help us to honour your name.

Come and set up your kingdom, so that everyone on earth will obey you, as you are obeyed in heaven.

Give us our food for today.

Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others.

Keep us from being tempted and protect us from evil.

Matthew 6:9-13 (Contemporary English Version)
